Understanding Consumer Complaints

PlainComplaint transforms the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database into a searchable resource for consumers, journalists, and researchers. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans file complaints about financial products and services with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. These complaints cover everything from credit reporting errors and debt collection practices to mortgage servicing problems and bank account fees. PlainComplaint makes this data easy to explore by company, product category, issue type, and state.

Whether you are researching a company before opening an account, investigating complaint trends in your state, or comparing how financial institutions handle consumer disputes, PlainComplaint provides the data you need. Every complaint record includes the company response, whether relief was provided, and whether the consumer disputed the outcome. Use the search bar above to look up any company, or browse by product category, issue type, or state below.

All data comes directly from the CFPB's public database. A complaint does not mean a company violated any law. Complaint volume is influenced by company size and customer base. We encourage users to consider this data alongside other sources when making financial decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PlainComplaint?

PlainComplaint makes the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database searchable and easy to explore. Look up any company to see their complaint history, response rates, and the issues consumers report most.

Where does the data come from?

All data comes from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's public complaint database. The CFPB collects complaints about consumer financial products and services and publishes them after the company responds or after 15 calendar days, whichever comes first.

Does a complaint mean a company did something wrong?

No. A complaint filed with the CFPB does not necessarily indicate that a company violated any law or regulation. Complaint volume is also influenced by company size — larger companies naturally receive more complaints. Always consider complaint data in context.

Is PlainComplaint free to use?

Yes. PlainComplaint is completely free. All data and search tools are available at no cost.
