About PlainComplaint
Our Mission
PlainComplaint exists to make the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database accessible to everyone. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau collects millions of consumer complaints about financial products and services, but navigating the raw data can be difficult for everyday consumers. PlainComplaint organizes this data into searchable company profiles, product categories, issue breakdowns, and state-level views so that anyone can quickly research a company's complaint history before making financial decisions.
We believe that transparency in the financial industry benefits consumers. When people can easily see how companies respond to complaints, which products generate the most issues, and what kinds of problems other consumers have experienced, they are better equipped to make informed choices about where to bank, borrow, and invest.
Our Data
All data comes directly from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Consumer Complaint Database. This is the official federal database of consumer complaints about financial products and services, established under the Dodd-Frank Act and operational since 2011. The database covers:
- Company profiles: Thousands of financial companies with complaint histories, response rates, and relief metrics
- Product categories: Credit reporting, debt collection, mortgages, credit cards, bank accounts, student loans, vehicle loans, money transfers, and more
- Issue types: Dozens of consumer-reported issue categories from incorrect credit report information to unauthorized account activity
- Geographic data: Complaint volumes and patterns for all 50 U.S. states and territories
We download the full CFPB dataset, process it through our data pipeline, and publish aggregated statistics. No complaint data is fabricated, modified, or editorially changed. Our methodology page explains the full pipeline in detail.
Publisher
PlainComplaint is a " portal. Kiznis Studio builds free, open data tools that make government and public datasets accessible to everyone. Our portals serve millions of users across dozens of data domains, from education and housing to healthcare and consumer protection. Every portal follows the same principles: use authoritative government data, present it without editorialization, and make it free to access without paywalls or account requirements.
How We Are Different
Unlike the CFPB's own search tool, PlainComplaint pre-computes company-level aggregations so you can instantly see a company's total complaint count, timely response rate, and relief percentage without searching through individual records. We also provide comparison views by product category, issue type, and state, making it easy to understand complaint patterns across the entire financial services industry. PlainComplaint is designed for quick lookups and research, not for filing complaints. To file a complaint with the CFPB, visit consumerfinance.gov/complaint.
Data Currency
The CFPB updates its public complaint database on a daily basis as companies respond to complaints and new filings are processed. PlainComplaint refreshes its local database quarterly to capture these updates, including newly published complaints, updated company response statuses, and revised metrics. Each quarterly refresh involves downloading the full CFPB dataset, reprocessing all aggregations, and rebuilding every company profile, product summary, and state-level view from scratch.
"Current" on PlainComplaint means the data reflects the most recent quarterly refresh. For real-time individual complaint records, consumers should consult the CFPB's own search interface directly at consumerfinance.gov. Our aggregated statistics, such as total complaint counts, timely response rates, and relief percentages, are accurate as of the last refresh and may differ slightly from the CFPB's live totals due to the natural lag between our update cycles.
PlainComplaint's quarterly refresh schedule balances data freshness against stability. Complaint trends, company performance patterns, and geographic distributions change gradually over time, so quarterly updates capture meaningful shifts without introducing noise from day-to-day fluctuations. The date of the most recent data refresh is noted on the methodology page.
Editorial Independence
Content on PlainComplaint is compiled by our editorial team. Raw data from CMS, HHS, CDC, FDA, and HRSA is transformed into readable profiles by our continuous editorial pipeline, validated against the source before publication. The PlainComplaint editorial team, operating under Kiznis Studio, is responsible for editorial standards, methodology, and corrections.
We do not accept payment, sponsorship, or promoted placement from providers, hospitals, manufacturers, or any healthcare entity. Our only revenue source is contextual display advertising served by Google AdSense — advertisers do not influence which entities we cover or how we present data, and they do not receive preferential placement.
Limitations
CFPB complaint data has inherent limitations that users should understand. The database only includes complaints filed through the CFPB's process and does not represent all consumer grievances with financial companies. Consumers who resolve issues directly with companies, complain through other channels, or are unaware of the CFPB's complaint process are not represented. Complaint volume is also heavily influenced by company size, media coverage of financial issues, and consumer awareness of the filing process, meaning higher complaint counts do not necessarily indicate worse service.
The CFPB does not verify the factual accuracy of consumer complaint narratives. Each complaint represents one consumer's perspective of their experience with a financial company. Companies provide their side through their formal responses, but these response details are not publicly available beyond the categorized response type. Users should treat complaint data as a signal rather than a verdict, and consider it alongside other information sources when making financial decisions.
Not Affiliated
PlainComplaint is not affiliated with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or any government agency. We are an independent data portal that repackages publicly available information into a more accessible format. The CFPB does not endorse, approve, or verify our presentation of the data.
